The Mathnawi, commonly referred to as the Masnavi or “Spiritual Couplets of Maulana,” is a seminal work of both Sufism and Persian literature. Written by the renowned poet Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi, it is a collection of six books containing over 25,000 verses that guide readers on a spiritual journey towards a deeper understanding of love with God. Rumi, considered one of the greatest Persian poets, crafted the Mathnawi as his literary masterpiece. Written in both Persian and Arabic, it has gained worldwide recognition, with translations available in multiple languages including Turkish, Urdu, French, Turkmen, Spanish, English, Arabic, German, Italian, Albanian and Swedish. The translation of the Mathnawi by Reynold Alleyne Nicholson is based on the oldest known manuscripts and strives to be a faithful representation of the original Persian text. The first book of the six-volume collection serves as an introduction to the spiritual path towards a higher understanding. The third volume of the Book series combines entertaining stories with teachings on God’s meaning, emphasizing epistemology through narratives featuring food.
